Forms of teaching

One to one piano lessons

Teaching methods are adopted to suit each individual´s needs. I take a lively and enthusiastic approach to teaching. Young children are encouraged to learn through games. Parents of young beginners are recommended to sit in during the first few lessons in order to help the child with home practice.

Piano & music theory fun classes

The classes are taught in small groups of 3-5 students. Lessons take place weekly and last 60 minutes each. The classes are suitable for complete beginners onwards.

The class is structured in three parts: first the theory part, then the practical part and finally the musical game part.

In the initial course the theory section focuses on note reading and writing in treble and bass clef, as well as rhythm reading and writing.  The practical part concentrates on the playing of new notes and rhythms and extra attention is given to correct posture when playing the piano, correct hand positioning and finger touch.

At the end of the class the children enjoy a musical game with fun elements.

From this initial course, children gain a better understanding of music in general whilst enjoying the experience of sharing music with other children of similar age.  Learning in a group environment also encourages practice at home because children are motivated by the progress of others. The teaching methods used encourage learning in a friendly and fun environment. This course works extremely well as an introduction to playing a musical instrument.

As the course advances more complex music theory is taught as well as music history, melody writing, composing etc. The practical part develops performance skills of the prepared pieces, aural training and the expansion of general musicianship. The final musical game section continues to reinforce the skills that have been learned.

Once a child reaches a higher level of the course, additional one-to-one piano lessons are recommended so the course can work as a supplement to their piano playing development.

The course programme is in accordance with the AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) Theory of Music and Musicianship Syllabus and prepares children for graded exams if they wish to take them.
